WebJan 28, 2009 · Posted January 27, 2009. I've not tried spraying the new Humbrol acrylics, but it sounds like it needs something to break the surface tension. Years ago I can remember reading that a tiny drop of detergent with the water is a good idea for thinning acrylic paint. You could also try thinning with isopropyl alcohol. It tends to give enamel paints a little more tooth for grabbing on to plastic. I use generic thinner for clean up afterwards. Like was stated above, make sure your Humbrol paints are mixed thoroughly-preferably by stirring. WebAug 19, 2024 · I can't speak for Humbrol or anyone else, but our thinner offers drying times comparible with cellulose thinners, long term storage ability without any chance of thinned paint returned to the tin decomposing or curing the contents and a far weaker and subjectively better smell than either white spirit or cellulose.

WebJan 6, 2009 · Humbrol paints are pretty thick though, probably more than most other enamels, so you do need to be quite robust with thinning them, and make sure when you do that you really do stir them for at least a minute, otherwise all the drying agents and pigment will sit at the bottom of the tinlet and you'll end up painting with thinned solvent.

I had some difficulty getting a fine spray when using some Humbrol #118 enamel thinned with tamiya thinners which I understood to be ok with enamels generally on the weekend. Whilst the paint was quite thin the droplet size seemed too coarse.

I did find things slightly more workable by bumping my compressor output to 30psi (which is twice what I usualy use in my gravity brush with Tamiya).
