Geniculo cortical pathway

WebOur findings provide anatomical evidence that the geniculo-cortical pathway in the mammalian visual system may use excitatory amino acid transmitters. In addition, the results support the notion that most long range connections that link distant points of the topographic map are excitatory. The tectopulvinar pathway and the geniculostriate pathway are the two visual pathways that travel from the retina to the early visual cortical areas. From the optic tract, the tectopulvinar pathway sends neuronal radiations to the superior colliculus in the tectum, then to the lateral posterior-pulvinar thalamic complex. Approximately 10% of retinal ganglion cells (mostly magnocellular) project onto the tectopulvinar pathway.
